History

Final Fantasy 9 is an RPG by Squaresoft, released for the Sony Playstation in November of 2000. It is the third and last Final Fantasy for the Playstation. The game introduced new features to the series, such as the "Active Time Event", "Mognet", and a revamped equipment and skill system. Final Fantasy 9 was influenced heavily by the original Final Fantasy and features of previous Final Fantasy titles.

Story

Set in the fantasy world of Gaia, Final Fantasy IX's plot centers on a war between several nations, sparked by an ambitious queen named Brahne. The story follows a young thief named Zidane, who joins with several others to defeat the Queen. The plot shifts, however, when the characters realize that Brahne is a puppet for an arms dealer called Kuja.

Final Fantasy IX takes place primarily on the four continents of a world named Gaia. Lands outside the Mist Continent are uncharted territories not explored until later in the game. The Mist Continent features four factions: Alexandria, Lindblum, Burmecia, and Cleyra. Gaia is inhabited by humans and various non-human races.

My Opinion

Reviews of Final Fantasy IX (FF9) generally branded the game as "good" or "okay". It's not talked about often in communities. No one said it was a bad game either. As for me, I believe FF9 deserves more praise - I think it's a fantastic game. Even now when my interest in gaming dwindles with age, FF9 still held my interest and empowered me to create a shrine for it.

As to be expected from the final installment of the PSX Final Fantasy series, FF9's graphics are superb. The pre-rendered 3D backgrounds are highly creative and detailed. All characters are beautifully fully textured. The soundtrack is so well made that I still casually listen to several of its songs. The story runs smoothly; there are few "boring parts". The game's loyalty to the Final Fantasy legacy provides for a warm, nostalgic, entertaining gaming experience; particularly with the battle system. FF9 is an overall great game and I recommend it.
