GAME GEAR / SMS

I'll be honest with you, like 95% of the games in Game Gear's library are absolutely terrible. However there are a handful that are worth your time. Browse this page and check out some of my favorites.
• You need a Game Gear emulator in order to play these games. You can download it from my site right here!

Columns

I prefer Game Gear Columns over the Genesis Columns. And the reason why is because I kinda like the music better and I enjoy the pretty (futuristic city?) background. The background slowly shifts from day to night as you progress in levels. And if you get tired of those plain 'ol crystals, Game Gear Columns (not Genesis Columns) gives you the option to change the crystals to dice, card symbols or even fruit! It's nifty.

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park is probably the most impressive Game Gear game. It's fun, the graphics are cool, the play control is good and the music ain't too shabby. This was one of my first Game Gear games. I've beaten it so many times; its pretty easy. There are five fun-filled action-packed stages to go through. Before you enter a stage, you go through a Duck Hunt kind of stage where you shoot off raptors and pteranodans. This driving stage is important because you can pick up items that increase your health. Your guy can use 3 weapons: a wave gun (shoots a small wave of electricity), a small bazooka thingy (only shoots diagonally into the air), and dynamite (explodes on contact). All these weapons can be used infinitely. The best thing I like about this game is the fact that there's a wide variety of enemies and different stages. Most Game Gear games are quite simplistic with the same handful of enemies and stages that all look virtually the same.

Mega Man

This Mega Man title (or "GG Mega Man" as I like to call it) wasn't made by Capcom! It's by some company called US Gold, and the quality of this game proves it. The usual Mega Man title has 8 boss stages and several Wily stages. This one only has 6 boss stages and two short Wily stages. The graphics and music are okay. I like that rooms are larger than the screen, but that can get annoying when you're jumping because the cropped screen doesn't let you know if there's a floor or pit under your feet as you fall. Overall, this is a very average Mega Man title. Despite its faults, GG Mega Man can be viewed in two ways: (1) If you compare it to other Mega Man titles, it's average; perhaps even dull, or (2) If you compare it to other Game Gear action games, it's a freakin masterpiece! Seriously. Because Game Gear action games are usually AWFUL in every way. So would I recommend GG Mega Man? Hmm, yeah, I would. If you're a fan of Game Gear or a Mega Man fan who absolutely must play every Mega Man title - then go ahead!

Power Strike 2

Power Strike 2 is so awesome!! =D Wow, I totally did not expect Game Gear to be capable of such an awesome shooter. The weapon system is great! It consists of protective rotating orbs, multiple lasers, homing missiles and napalm missiles. Each one can be upgraded when you pick up the "P-capsule" power-ups. My only complaint is that sometimes the background distracts you from the gameplay, especially in the first level.
SMS: Power Strike 2 was also released for the Sega Master System. However it is quite different from the Game Gear version. The stages of the SMS version are mostly based on planets, while the stages of the Game Gear version are mostly based on outer space.

Pyschic World

OH!! This is my most favorite Game Gear game!! It's so fun!!! You control a psychic girl who has the power fire, ice, sonic waves, temporary invincibility, levitation, and more! Well, she doesn't get them all immediately. She gains her special powers little by little as you pick up special items that enemies drop. Best of all, this game actually has good music! The opening song is awesome!! Psychic World is definitely worth playing. Oh by the way, you need to press down+button 2 to access your powers. It took me a while to figure that out the first time I played it.
SMS: Psychic World was also released for the Sega Master System. However it is quite different from the Game Gear version. The stages of the SMS version are different, the color pallets are flat-out nasty, and the graphics are not as pretty.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Although it's easy to assume that this version of Sonic came out first, it actually came out after the Genesis version! This game is pretty cool. It's fun, the graphics are good, the music is quite catchy and the stages have lots o' eye candy. Honestly, I think the ending stages in this game are more interesting than in Sonic 1 for Genesis. I also think it has better graphics than the rest of the Sonic Game Gear titles.
SMS: Sonic the Hedgehog was also released for the Sega Master System. They're both the exact same game; the Game Gear version was a direct port, with a smaller screen size as the only exception.

Vampire: Master of Darkness

If you ever wanted to experience a Castlevania title on Game Gear, then now's your chance! =P I swear, this game is such a Castlevania rip-off. Just look at the screen shots! The enemies and stage design are screaming out Castlevania. You get to grab an assortment of special weapons, which are a carbon copy of Castlevania's special weapons. I just wish they would've also copied the quality of Castlevania's soundtrack, because it's not all that great. The game itself has decent graphics. I thought it was fun. The boss battles get quite challenging as you progress. All in all, I think the game is worth playing.
SMS: Vampire MoD was also released for the Sega Master System. They're both the exact same game; the Game Gear version is a direct port, with a smaller screen size as the only exception.

X-Men

X-Men is quite repetitive but somehow I find it strangely entertaining. You start the game with Wolverine and Cyclops. You need to rescue the rest of the X-Men from various parts of the world and then go after Magneto! Oh what suspense. You rescue X-Men such as Rogue, Storm, Nightcrawler, and more! Storm and Rogue can fly! Nightcrawler can teleport through walls! Oh how exciting. Can you feel the excitement? I'm sure you can. But I don't like the two sequels that came after this game.
