About BGB

This tutorial is to help you with BGB. When it comes to quality emulation, BGB and another emulator called NO$GMB are both near-perfect. However, NO$GMB is full of complicated features that only a programmer would find useful, and NO$GMB requires a fee after its 30 day trial. >_< Practically every member of the classic gaming community prefers BGB when it comes to Gameboy and Gameboy Color emulation. Besides not offering any screen renders, BGB has all the other useful features that are expected in vg emulators.

*If you would like to download BGB, I have it in my emulators page.

Extracting & Placement

I suggest you make a new folder called "Gameboy" or "Gameboy Color" within a folder called "Emulation". You don't have to, but it makes things a little easier for you if you're not too computer literate. Extract all the contents of this emulator's zip file into the Gameboy folder. If you don't know how to extract files from a zip file then read this. Put all of your Gameboy ROMs and Gameboy Color ROMs into the Gameboy folder too. BGB has zip support, so you do not have to extract ROMs from their zip files. Double-click on "bgb" to open it.

Save states is a feature that saves the exact spot you are in a game.

1. Once a game is open, press the F2 key to save your game.

2. When you wish to recall your saved state, press F4.

3. You can also access this feature when you right-click on the white screen then go to State. BGB allows you to save up to 10 different states per game, press F3 to choose which slot you want to save/load from.

Side Note: All the RPG shrines in my FantasyAnime offer complete collections of periodical game saves so that you can continue at any significant point in the game. If you'd like to learn more about how to use somebody else's saves or transfer saves between emulators, check out my Game Saves Tutorial.

Window size/full screen

By default BGB will open up with the 2x2 screen. To change its size, right-click on the white screen then go to Window size (as shown in the image above). Here you can change the window size to...

1x1 - original screen size.

2x2 - 2 times zoom.

3x3 - 3 times zoom.

4x4 - 4 times zoom.

Fullscreen - Hides your desktop with a solid black background. Can be used with 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, or 4x4.

Fullscreen stretched - Blows up the display to fill the screen. I don't recommend this one.

Changing/saving colors for Gameboy

1. Press the F11 key, or right-click on the white screen then go to Options.

2. Click on the GB Colors tab, you will arrive here. All you need to worry about here are the three notches I've circled and the palette of 4 colored squares.

3. Click on a square then move around the three notches to change its color. You can also click on a scheme in the "Scheme" box to change the palette to a preset combination.

4. Once you come up with a custom color combination that you like, then click on the Add button and type in what you want to call it. This will add it to the "Scheme" list.

5. Click on Apply then OK when you're done.

More with colors

Here's a list of "color codes" I've put together for BGB. My favorite color is blue so I prefer white/light blue/blue/black. For some brown's, yellow's and grey's, just mess around with the preset schemes. Don't forget to save your favorite color combinations via the Add button so you don't have to enter them again.

White: 31, 31, 31

Black: 0, 0, 0

Blue: 0, 0, 31

Light Blue: 10, 15, 31 or 10, 20, 31

Red: 31, 0, 0

Capturing screen shots

Super Gameboy border

By default, BGB will not show the border of a Super Gameboy compatible Gameboy game. To show it, Press the F11 key, or right-click on the white screen then go to Options. Click on the System tab then put the bullet next to Super Gameboy. There is an option there that can enable Super Gameboy and Gameboy Color at the same time (SGB+GBC), but the creator of BGB does not recommend it because it may cause your game to lock up. Anyway, when you're done fiddling around with all these options, I suggest you put it back to Prefer GBC since that is the default (and most compatible) mode.

Finding cheats

GameGenie.com and About.com are pretty good sources. The next best source is Google. The best search keywords to use is to type the name of the game then "game genie". Like so (without qoutes): "shining force sword of hajya game genie".
